Tenure in Office Act of 1867


The Tenure in Office Act was passed March 2, 1867. This act forbade any President from removing a person from office without the approval from the Senate. It also said that a member of the President's Cabinet must serve for one full term and a month after being removed from office. This act was passed over President Andrew Johnson's veto. This act was eventually declared unconstitutional.
